Buddy Valastro (Aka: Cake Boss) Shares His Excitement Over Opening Carlo’s Bake Shop on Norwegian Breakaway!January 18, 2013
I can’t tell you how happy I am to have finally announced that a Carlo’s Bake Shop will be opening on Norwegian Breakaway. This partnership has allowed me to achieve so many goals, the most important, being able to reach more of my fans all across the globe. You all mean the world to me and I wanted to bring this slice of Hoboken to you.
Myself, the Carlo’s Bakery family and the Norwegian Cruise Line team have been working hard to build you the true Carlo’s Bake Shop experience. We happily welcomed the Norwegian pastry team to Hoboken and gave them a closer look at how we do things at Carlo’s. We are doing everything to make sure the cakes, pastries and cookies you’re gonna enjoy taste just like they came out of the oven at Carlo’s! And we’re not stopping at pastries, guests will be able to order custom cakes to make whatever they are celebrating – birthdays, weddings, anniversaries – that much more special. But the best part is you can enjoy your Carlo’s favorites while sailing on one of the most amazing and impressive ships on the water!
Family is the most important thing to me. A cruise is such a great vacation for families to relax and spend quality time together. That is one of the main reasons why I wanted to bring a Carlo’s Bake Shop on-board. We want the whole famiglia to get together at one of our new cupcake decorating classes or just enjoy a few cannolis.
This really is a top-notch team and I could not be prouder to be working with them. Norwegian Breakaway is going to be like forgetaboutit! I can’t wait to get on board and check out this beautiful new ship. Who’s comin?! Let me hear it on Twitter – @cakebossbuddy and on Facebook! See you there! Buddy
Adreneline junkies rejoice! The expansive Aqua Park and Recreation area, including the ship’s ropes course and rock climbing wall, are all currently being installed on the top decks of Norwegian Breakaway.
Fun fact: When you blast through one of the the two Aqua-loops you will be traveling at up to 33 miles per hour! Get ready for an adrenaline rush!
Norwegian Breakaway will truly light up the sky when she sets sail in May 2013. On each and every cruise, guests on board will be dazzled by a spectacular pyrotechnics display that will be launched directly from the ship up into the night sky. The incredible show will be the grand finale of a massive 1980s themed deck party and will be set to a play list of 1980s hits such as, “Come on Feel the Noise,” by Quiet Riot; “Whip It,” by Devo; “Cherish,” by Madonna; “Final Countdown,” by Europe; and “Purple Rain,” by Prince. As the fireworks blast to the beat of the music, guests will enjoy an experience unlike anything else offered at sea on New York’s ship.

Hello Friends! It has been a few months since I’ve shared the latest updates on the Breakaway Blog, but boy, has it been busy! I wanted to give you an update on the progress of Ocean Blue, The Raw Bar and Ocean Blue on The Waterfront and give you some insider information on what we have been doing behind the scenes to make this restaurant come to life.
Here in New York, we have selected china, silverware, table linen, and other custom elements made just for this space. We’ve talked about menu design and uniforms, thinking all the while, “How can we make this restaurant different from anything anyone has experienced before on the water? How can we go that extra mile for Norwegian’s Guests.”
We have been training the Executive Chef for Ocean Blue at my New York restaurant, The Lambs Club, located on 44th Street. Together we have been working together to develop the menu, and adapting it to work on board.
I am proud to report that the dessert menu is complete! –There is nothing wrong with starting backwards, especially since I know that “Norwegians like to eat dessert first!”
The above is a photo of me working with my pastry chef Bjorn Bottcher in The Lambs Club kitchen – we were creating a dish that will be served on board.
I have been fascinated about all the intricacies of creating a venue for a ship. It is certainly worlds apart from a “land” based restaurant opening. The Norwegian team is so skilled at this whole process and truly, they have been great teachers and collaborators.
I am also thrilled that legendary New York City Icons, The Rockettes have been appointed Godmothers of Norwegian Breakaway! Maybe they will want to stop in for dessert soon…
I will be back in touch to keep you updated on the progress of the restaurants. In the meantime, send me comments or questions on twitter at @GZChef. Cheers!
Norwegian Breakaway will offer a true Ice Bar on board, which will be kept at 17 degrees Fahrenheit and will feature ice sculptures of the Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty and the Chrysler Building to pay homage to New York City, the ship’s year-round homeport. The Ice Bar will also feature New York City-inspired specialty cocktails.
Norwegian Breakaway’s Ice Bar is a unique artic-like frozen chamber, guaranteed to give everyone who enters the ultimate chill. The bar, seating and glasses will all be made entirely from ice. Located on deck eight, the Ice Bar will accommodate approximately 25 guests at a time who will be given hooded coats and gloves to keep warm, since the room’s temperature will not rise above 17 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Ice Bar will feature six New York City-Inspired Specialty Cocktails:
• Spiked Apple Juice: Vodka, sour apple schnapps, melon liqueur and a splash of fresh lemon sour;
• Broadway Dreams: Vodka and ice wine chilled straight;
• Yellow Cab: Vodka, peach schnapps and orange juice;
• Times Square Lights: Citron vodka, blue curacao and fresh lemon sour;
• Central Park: Citron vodka, ice wine, and lemon/lime soda;
• Rock Center: Ice wine, vodka, blue curacao and club soda.
The Ice Bar will also serve two non-alcoholic beverages – the Lady Liberty, made of strawberry puree, pineapple juice and lemon juice, and the Coney Island, with orange juice, vanilla ice cream and milk. All drinks are served in specially-created glasses made entirely of ice.
Yesterday at Meyer Werft, the dock was filled with water and now Norwegian Breakaway is officially floating!
The ship was pulled to the other end of the dock in order to give space for the first block of Norwegian Getaway.
This photo shows the winch and line that was used to pull Norwegian Breakaway to the front end of the dock.
The incredible third photo shows Norwegian Breakaway fully assembled with all blocks!
We cannot wait to welcome this beautiful ship into our fleet!
